چکیده

This paper presents the implementation of eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) in general-purpose commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics for first time. An enrichment strategy is proposed, consistent with structure software. To this end, each set functions, an additional Solid Mechanics module incorporated into numerical framework, coupled compatible modifications to internal variables. The Linear Elastic Fracture (LEFM) exclusively adopted crack analysis. model pre-processing, level update, stress intensity factor calculation and propagation analysis are conducted by employing COMSOL’s built-in features conjunction external MATLAB functions through LiveLink. All implementational aspects suggested remedies treatment enriched elements, framework setup, evaluation factors, integration described detail. accuracy robustness proposed method examined several examples, including mixed-mode 2D domains as well stationary planar fractures 3D settings. results represent excellent agreement available analytical, experimental observations literature.

An unstructured immersed finite element method for nonlinear solid mechanics

We present an immersed finite element technique for boundary-value and interface problems from nonlinear solid mechanics. Its key features are the implicit representation of domain boundaries and interfaces, the use of Nitsche’s method for the incorporation of boundary conditions, accurate numerical integration based on marching tetrahedrons and cut-element stabilisation by means of extrapolati...

An Abaqus implementation of the extended finite element method

In this paper, we introduce an implementation of the extended finite element method for fracture problems within the finite element software ABAQUSTM. User subroutine (UEL) in Abaqus is used to enable the incorporation of extended finite element capabilities. We provide details on the data input format together with the proposed user element subroutine, which constitutes the core of the finite ...

Numerical Demonstration of Finite Element Convergence for Lagrange Elements in COMSOL Multiphysics

The convergence order of finite elements is related to the polynomial order of the basis functions used on each element, with higher order polynomials yielding better convergence orders. However, two issues can prevent this convergence order from being achieved: the lack of regularity of the PDE solution and the poor approximation of curved boundaries by polygonal meshes. We show studies for La...

Finite Element Analysis of Permeation Tests on Articular Cartilage under Different Testing Conditions Using COMSOL Multiphysics

Articular cartilage is composed of a charged solid matrix (proteoglycan and collagen fibres) and an interstitial fluid phase. The tissue is characterized by a very low permeability that guarantee the support and distribution of loads in diarthrodial joints and the transport of nutrients to chondrocytes. The permeability of articular cartilage decreases for increasing deformation of the solid ma...

The Natural Element Method in Solid Mechanics

The application of the Natural Element Method (NEM) 2 to boundary value problems in two-dimensional small displacement elastostatics is presented. The discrete model of the domain consists of a set of distinct nodes N , and a polygonal description of the boundary @ . In the Natural Element Method, the trial and test functions are constructed using natural neighbour interpolants. These interpola...
